Undercover traces missing Macs

Undercover is a new software system from Orbicule Inc. that traces the location of missing and stolen Macs. It costs $29.99 for a single user license, or $44 for a household license, and requires Mac OS X v10.4 or later.

Macs equipped with Undercover are assigned an ID by a server, which they check with routinely. In the event the machine is stolen or misplaced, Undercover transmits its Internet location, which Orbicule can then use to identify the computer’s physical location.

Undercover also takes screenshots of the stolen Mac, which will hopefully aid you in identifying the thief. Orbicule then works with law enforcement to apprehend the Mac.

What’s more, Undercover features a “plan B:” It will simulate a hardware failure on the Mac, which might cause the thief to send the computer for repair or sell it. Undercover can then warn the new user that the Mac has been stolen.

Undercover is a Universal Binary that runs natively on Intel and PowerPC-based M.
