QUESTION: A member asked: "I was wondering if you could recommend an Apple laptop/notebook that I could get my husband for Christmas. He has Apple at work and I have really taken over the home computer so thought it might be a good Christmas present if not terribly expensive. He isn't too computer knowledgeable but manages to work his way through so he doesn't need anything too sophisticated. Can you get good buys over the internet, if so any special site? Any help greatly appreciated, just in the thinking about it stage."
ANSWER: How about the new Mac Book (laptop).
Here's the initial poop on the first release in May:
Here's a review of the May release (3 models) $1099, $1299 and $1499 for black (not real need this one):
On Nov 8th, Apple upgraded the Mac Book with a Core 2 Duo. It's a very fast machine and not only runs the Mac operating system, but also Windows (you do have to buy the Windows software separately).
There are still, three models. Discounting the most expensive black one, the difference in the two white ones is below:
The 1.83GHz model features 512MB of RAM, a 60GB hard disk drive and slot-load Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) optical drive; the 2.0GHz models include 1GB of RAM (all MacBooks can be expanded to support up to 2GB of RAM). The white 2.0GHz model also features an 80GB hard disk drive and a 6x SuperDrive with double-layer support. The black model features a 120GB hard disk drive instead.
If you're not sure whether your husband would want the faster machine (1.83 vs. 2.0 GHz), the larger hard drive (60 vs. 80GB), the super drive (read/write CD and read DVD vs. read/write CD and DVD), and 512MB vs. 1 GB of memory-----then give him a gift certificate and take him to the nearest Apple store. authorized Apple reseller (like Microworld or Cyber City), or buy directly from Apple online. That way he can get exactly what he wants and spend even more of your money!!!!! If you decide to go to any store, I'd recommend you call ahead to see if they have what you want in stock. The further away you are from Christmas the better the chance they will have some.
If your husband will be using the laptop primarily at home, you may wish to put in a wireless network for him so he can use the laptop anywhere in the house (thinking bathroom, garage, and basement). The laptop comes with most of the wireless stuff you need. You would only have to purchase an Airport base station. Apple store or reseller can help on this, especially if you give them the specs on what your internet provider gives you.
Here is the current Apple web site page describing in more detail the Mac Book:
Whichever one you decide to get, we STONGLY recommend you also purchase AppleCare Protection Plan (APP). The AppleCare Protection Plan extends your computer's 90 days of complimentary support and one-year warranty to up to three years of world-class support. Cost is $249.00.
Now if he really doesn't need a laptop and already has an extra monitor, a USB keyboard, and a USB mouse, then the Mac Mini is the way to go and it's just or even more capable at half the price and it's REALLY small and takes up practically no desk space. Of course it's not battery powered. Here the spec sheet on the Mini:
