FireWire speed degraded under Mac OS X 10.5.2?

According to reader reports, Mac OS X 10.5.2 may cause a significant degradation in FireWire throughput for some systems. A few users have noticed what seems like slower-than-normal data transfer rates for FireWire 800-connected drives, and MacFixIt reader John Hunt did some empirical testing with a Power Mac G5 and an OWC Mercury Elite-AL 1 drive:

"I loaded Mac OS X 10.4.11, then 10.5 and 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 on an external drive. The Xbench values were, 62.57 61.73, 69.12, and 41.72 respectively."

That's a drop of nearly 40 percent for Mac OS X 10.5.2 relative to Mac OS X 10.5.1.
