Back in March Google acquired @Last Software, makers of the 3D sketching program SketchUp. Following the acquisition Google released a free version of SketchUp, but only for Windows users. Now the company has countered with a free Mac version of SketchUp as well.
Used by landscape designers, architects and others, SketchUp can be used to create and visualize 3D ideas. You can push and pull on 3D objects until you’ve got the right shape; experiment with color and texture; use real-time shadowcasting and even use a library of pre-drawn components to save time.
System requirements call for Mac OS X, G4/400MHz or faster; 128MB RAM; 80MB hard disk drive space; QuickTime 5.0 or later and Web browser for multimedia tutorials; and OpenGL-compliant video card.
The free version of SketchUp is available for personal, non-commercial use only. SketchUp Pro 5 is the paid version; it includes additional features such as the ability to export 3DS, DWG, DXF and OBJ models; export animations and walkthroughs; use organic modeling and pre-visualization tools; import and export GIS data, and much more. SketchUp Pro 5 costs $495 for a single-user license.
